In June, I had the wonderful opportunity to fly out to Nashville (OMG cannot wait to go back) to attend a Film Workshop hosted and taught by Julie Paisley. Myself, along with three other photographers, sat in Julie’s cottage, hung out and talked all things photography and film. It was all very natural and organic.
During our time there, we had three different shoots where we broke out our film cameras and (at least for me) various types of film. You’ve already seen the Bridal Boudoir shoot earlier – along with that, we also did a styled wedding and a bridal shoot (these are huge in the South, I cannot wait until this becomes a thing out here too). During all of the sessions, Julie was an open book. Although we were all established photographers, she’d help us with our settings and tell us why it’s different than digital.
I was nicknamed, “Vogue” during the first session. Funny little homage to my style of photography (and the difference between California and other parts of the US). An on-going tag that I don’t think I’ll ever let go of! I smiled big when I’d hear, “Oh, there you go again, Vogue!” Yes, my clients so deserve Vogue, in every sense of the word. I also learned that I’m also very hands off with my subjects in comparison to others. I talk a lot through my camera instead of, ‘touching and positioning’ my clients. But the big thing and learning curve for me was to… Slow down. After processing, every snap of that shutter is approximately $3. $3 wasted every time you ‘snap’ without purpose. Needless to say, I really slowed down – I think I took less rolls of film than everyone else – but that’s okay.
Once my film came back, I peeked though it all and felt very satisfied.
What I got in return was amazing. Time.
Enjoy.
